Solar Eclipse

On Monday, August 21, 2017, a solar eclipse will pass over Alabama, beginning at approximately noon, reaching totality at 1:30 and ending just before 3:00.  This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from anywhere on mainland United States since the total solar eclipse in March 1979. The next one will be in April 2024, but it will not be visible from nearly as many US locations as the 2017 eclipse.

Since this is a historical event, we want our students to experience this learning opportunity.  In order to do this safely, our school will be viewing the eclipse indoors via the internet.  Students will not be allowed outside to view the eclipse during this time for safety reasons.

However, should you wish for your child to participate in an outdoor experience to view the solar eclipse as it passes over Alabama and given that this is an historical/educational event, I will allow parents to check their student(s) out from school at 11:30AM. This check out from school will not count against your child's limited check outs and will also be excusable for any missing work. Parents, please come to the main office, with your  Driver's License, and check your student out. We will stop allowing check outs at 12noon so that we can resume our instructional day and participate in the internet viewing.

Please remind your student that it is never safe to look directly at the sun, even if part of it is obscured.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call us.
